Bastar is a tribal dominated area where many tribes like Gond, Muria, Madia, Bhatra, Dhurva, Paraja, Halba reside. Gond tribe has the highest population among all these, which has many sub-branches, these sub-branches have their own cultural specialties. Cultural specialties include folk songs, folk dances, folk tales and folk art. The folk songs of these tribes describe their socio-cultural traditions and beliefs. In the same sequence, there are some folk songs in which the history of Bastar is described. We can also call it the oral history of Bastar. The tribes here have their own dialects, but Gondi and Halbi are used in most areas. Halbi dialect has a special place among these dialects of Bastar because this dialect has the status of a contact language. Due to which we get most of the folk songs in Halbi dialect. Through these folk songs, we get to know about their love, religious faith and social and cultural traditions. Since there is a lack of literature to study the history of Bastar, we get to see history in the folk songs of this place. At present, some writers and historians are working on documenting the folk songs, music and culture of Bastar, which is an important book to know and understand the history of Bastar and its social-cultural tradition.
